More information
A genetic engineer will perform research into the genes of humans, plants and animals. Most genetic engineers will have their own specialist subjects which they will pursue for many years.
In order to become a genetic engineer a great deal of training is required. Candidates must attend university and attain a degree in a science-related subject, such as chemistry or biology. After acquiring a degree a further year of study is required to receive a masters in a more specialised subject. Candidates must then find an institution that will allow them to work on their doctoral degree. As well as having these qualifications candidates are also expected to attend regular seminars and lectures in order to keep up-to-date with scientific advances and new technology. To attain employment candidates must also be able to prove that they have experience. This can usually be earned through voluntary work experience and research programmes.
Genetic engineers must also have other skills aside from formal qualifications. They must be able to work well in a group as the majority of employment opportunities are collaborative efforts. Good oral and written English skills are also essential.
Genetic engineer jobs are very competitive. The majority of employment is based in inner cities. Genetic engineers may also have to work in research labs overseas. Genetic engineer jobs can often be found through recruitment agencies.
The starting salary for a genetic engineer in the UK is around £28,000; however those who build up a good reputation could earn up to £100,000.
