Most Popular Towns for Construction in Suffolk
More information
The historic county of Suffolk is located in the East Anglian region of eastern England. Its largest town is Ipswich, but it also includes the towns of Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Bury St. Edmunds.
Construction is not historically one of Suffolk's main industries. Indeed, the historic nature of the county means that it has some of the most stringent planning regulations in England. The emphasis of the economy is slowly moving from agriculture to services and industry, however. This means that the construction industry will have a significant part to play in Suffolk's future. Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft were recently granted enterprise zone status by the government, so employment opportunities in construction should increase over the next decade.
Most of the UK's major construction firms have ongoing projects around the towns of Ipswich, Lowestoft and Felxstowe in particular; these include Miller's, Wimpey and Balfour Beatty. Suffolk County Council are also working in partnership with the local Chamber of Commerce in an effort to make the region one of the high-tec centres of excellence in the UK - something that is certain to increase the number of staff jobs in construction over the next few years.
The sporadic nature of building projects in Suffolk means recruitment agencies in the area often advertise fixed-term jobs or those offered on a self-employed basis.
