Most Popular Science Job Roles
Most Popular Locations for Science
More information
The Scientific industry is one of the most diverse fields in the UK and provides more than 5.8 million jobs across a range of specialisms. Around 20% of the workforce is employed in one of the five main sub-sectors; Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences.
Salaries vary, with the Forensic and Medical Sciences tending to offer the highest earnings, although, Data Management, Bioinformatics and Clinical Trial / Research jobs can also be lucrative.
Candidates usually require a degree in their desired field, but specialist positions may also need postgraduate study (such as a Masters or PhD). There are also a number of professional bodies that job seekers may be interested in joining. For instance, geoscience graduates may benefit from joining the Geology Society, whereas the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is designed to support Chemical Scientists.
Some jobs depend largely upon grants or contract renewals, and can therefore be somewhat unstable for long-term prospects. Fortunately, most professionals are highly trained and technically educated, meaning they have little difficulty in obtaining new posts when funding dries up.
Job opportunities are available within a range of high-profile companies, such as Procter and Gamble (P&G), Unilever, BP and the Met Office. While London is one of the most popular locations for finding work, the ancient university cities of Oxford and Cambridge are also hotspots for Science candidates.
