Consultancy really began to grow in 1914, with the launch of Booz Allen Hamilton, followed by McKinsey's formation in 1926. While times have been tough for the industry, thanks to media vilification and the recession, London remains a European hub for this industry.
Those looking for consultancy roles would be advised to consider London, with the city home not only to the majority of the larger scale UK players, but also to regional offices for larger multinational companies. Larger firms tend to work across a diverse range of industries, but opportunities are also available in smaller agencies that specialise in one or two areas only.
Some consultancies will specialise in management only, while others will cover HR, IT and various other business needs.
Recruitment agencies are searching for candidates at all levels, from graduate trainees to consultancy veterans for senior management positions. Across the UK, salaries tend to start at around £20,000 per annum: a figure that is often higher for London-based positions. Salaries, however, will vary between smaller, "boutique" consultancy firms and large multinational corporations.
The majority of roles available are for full time, permanent staff, but some recruitment agencies will also be seeking contractors for specific projects.
