More information
The Health Care and Medical industries play a key role both economically and in the day to day lives of people across the UK. Healthcare provides employment opportunities in the public and private sectors, covering a broad spectrum of fields including Dentistry, Hospitals and Nursing Homes. Due to demands of this challenging but rewarding area of work, recruitment agencies are commonly used to supply top professionals who have the necessary attributes to succeed.
The NHS and the Private Health Care Sector
The National Health Service (NHS), is responsible for the majority of the country's health services and offers free care to all UK residents at the point of delivery. With a workforce of over 1.3 million staff members, the NHS is the largest single employer in Europe and provides jobs for candidates across a full range of disciplines. Doctors and nursing staff are the most heavily employed, followed by scientific and therapeutic practitioners. The NHS will work with a number of recruitment agencies to fill some of these roles. Among the busiest NHS trusts are those in Leicester, Birmingham and London.
The Private Health Sector does not offer free care services and is thought to accrue an annual income of over £6 billion. Private hospital fees are responsible for more than half of this, with specialists' fees and private NHS patients also contributing towards that figure. Health Care Consultants may transcend the public / private sectors, and around 28,000 professionals are considered to be delivering some form of private care.
Salaries and qualifications
In the NHS, professionals will fall into different pay bands (1-9) and this will be determined by the job role. A qualified Nurse for instance, will start at band 5 and command a salary of £21K-£27K, whereas experience can see this rise to band 6 or 7 and earnings of £30K+. The top bands promise the highest salaries and these are most commonly earned by GPs, Consultants or Directors. The Private Health Sector does not abide to a set pay scale and so salaries can prove to be even more diverse, typically exceeding NHS earnings for most comparative jobs.
Health or Medical jobs can present a challenging environment to candidates, although they are also considered personally rewarding. Top professionals will require an empathetic nature, excellent communication skills and the ability to operate in fast paced / stressful conditions. Qualifications will vary, but most professionals will require a university degree. Although graduates tend to be the most coveted, it is possible to enter some health care jobs with GCSEs and/or work experience.
